At the heart of Samsung's environmental strategy is the transformation of ocean-bound waste, specifically discarded fishing nets, into high-quality recycled materials for its Galaxy devices. This innovative approach began with the Galaxy S22 series and has since become a staple in the manufacturing of all Galaxy mobile products. Stephanie Choi, EVP & Head of Marketing of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, remarked, "We initiated our commitment to the world's oceans when we transformed discarded fishing nets into key components of the Galaxy S22 series, which to date, has incorporated more than 150 tonnes of discarded fishing nets."

In 2024, Samsung is taking its environmental commitment a notch higher by partnering with the U.S.-based nonprofit Seatrees and the University of California San Diego. This collaboration is designed to explore new methods for coral reef restoration, utilizing Galaxy camera technology to empower local activists and researchers. These tools are crucial for monitoring and improving the restoration efforts of reefs impacted by climate change and pollution.

A New Frontier in Reef Conservation

Coral reefs, occupying less than 1 percent of the ocean floor, support about 25 percent of all marine life, making them among the most vital ecosystems on the planet. However, they are also among the most vulnerable, facing threats from climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Recognizing this, Samsung and its partners are employing mobile technology to democratize and streamline the coral restoration process. This technology aids in collecting accurate data and images that are vital for assessing the health and progression of coral restoration efforts.

The introduction of a customized camera mode, dubbed "Ocean Mode," exemplifies Samsung's tailored approach to environmental conservation. This mode enhances the Galaxy camera’s functionality under water, ensuring high-quality image capture that is critical for accurate data analysis and effective restoration strategies.

Dr. Stuart Sandin, Marine Ecologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, emphasizes the importance of reliable data in coral restoration, stating, "Design and implementation of coral reef restoration need to be informed by reliable information about what works and what doesn’t." This initiative has already seen significant implementation across diverse geographical locations including Bali, Indonesia; Viti Levu Island, Fiji; and Florida, USA. With over 11,000 coral fragments planted, the efforts underline a scalable approach to environmental conservation.
