One of the more shocking discoveries included chat apps predominantly used by "nothing but pedophiles," according to the report. Moreover, certain apps were found that allowed kids to bypass internet restrictions or upload photos to be rated for "hotness," further compounding the risks these supposed child-safe apps bring into unsuspecting homes.
Apple has long maintained that the App Store is a "safe and trusted place to discover and download apps," with special assurances for parents about the ease of accessing age-appropriate content for their children. The issue stems partly from the profit motive influencing the age ratings issued by app developers, who may prioritize broader accessibility—and thus higher download rates—over genuine safety considerations.
